Medical treatment for Luca who is suffering from allergy

My sweet and lovely 5,5 yrs old basset hound (Luca) is suffering from serious allergy (dust) since her age of 2. Luca is my best friend. She has such a warm heart and such a wonderful personality she makes everybody smile around her. As a single, working woman I do everything for my sweetest friend but I ran out of money (I already have loans from friends and family). So far her treatments cost around 4800 EUR (5400 USD or 1.500.000 HUF), because doctors didn't find the cure for her. Now she gets a pill (anthistamin) and an injection. This injection is made especially for her by her blood in a German laboratory where our vet sent her blood for testing. Our vet told she will needs these treatments lifelong. I give her special food, based on PREY diet, to ensure her the most healthiest diet I can. She also gets coconut oil to reduce her scratching. Although I have a full-time and a part time job too I can not pay back that 4800 EUR loan to my friends and family and can not cover her treatment at the same time.

Tale of Luca, the basset hound

-told by Luca-

Once upon a time…there were two basset hounds living on a farm. They fell in love each other. The fruits of their love were 9 little basset hound puppies. One of them was me. I didn’t have any name that time, but I do remember I was born and lived with my siblings in a stall. Yes, like baby Jesus. J

Not very far from us my new Mom may have heard my voice and one day she came to visit me. She wanted to adopt a basset hound and make her/him happy.

When I saw her I ran to her and felt- she will be my new Mum because the stall became smaller and smaller as me and my siblings became bigger and bigger.

This is the first touch I gave my Mommy. I felt myself safe in her arms. I wanted to stay with my Mom but my hairy parents told me I am too small to leave them, so we had to wait another 2 weeks to unit.

Time flew…and my Mom came to take me to my new home. I cried because it was not easy to leave my hairy family there. But my Mum held me in her arms the whole way home. She gave me Little Cow-Head, I hugged her and cried. But when we reached my new home I fell asleep with Little Cow-Head on my new pillow. Little Cow-Head became one of my best friend. I love sleeping while cuddling her.

My Mom chose a name for me. I had to learn it. So my name is Luca.

We lived happily together. I slept a lot, even I sometimes fell asleep during play.

My Mom told me I was the most beautiful and the kindest puppy in the world. I think she was right. I was cute, aren’t I?

I was talented. I could focus so hard on games and foods. I always loved food.

The days and weeks of my happy life with her flew so fast…and soon I became 6 months old. We celebrated it with my Mom.

I felt that Mom’s love for me is endless. She I was so cute…she gave me kisses on my head all the time.

As I grew up walks and playing in the park became my daily habit. I made some friendships too.

I met Lola, she became my BFF. Here we look innocent. I lived together with a small bunny for a couple of days. At the beginning she wanted to run. But later she realized I am her best friend. So we had some nice naps together.

I became a big dog… On my first birthday my Mom organized a big party for me. I had cake and gifts and guests…It was a great party. Since then there is a party for me every year on my birthday.

On a cold day in January 2013 my Mum realized I scratched myself more than usual. She took me to the vet (I don’t like vets, they smell awful)…and they said I had allergy. Vets didn’t find the cure, because they didn’t find my allergy. My Mum took me to the vet every week. The treatments we tried didnt show any effect. And I just kept scratching my skin and my hair become disappearing from my body. My Mum was so worried all the time.

We tried a treatment and I needed have a bath every second day. I hated it.

We tried steroids.

We tried different types of diets.

Although we tried special diets, treatments, pills and shampoos…my condition didn’t change.

My Mum organised for me my usual birthday party…But my mood was not the best… I wanted to scratch myself so she had to hug and hold me.

On a nice spring day in 2015 my Mum took me to another new vet, we have never been there before.

This kind vet sent my blood to a special German laboratory where they found out I have a very intense and very rare allergy. I have allergy on two types of dust. They made a special injection for me I get every week / every 2 weeks (my Mum consults the vet very often) and my condition became better, very slow.

The vet told my Mum I will never be healthy again- I will have to get these injections till the end of my life. And from time to time, especially during winter time my condition will become worse because of the heating which puts more dust to the air.

Unfortunately these special injections I have to get regularly cost a fortune.

My Mum needs help to cover my treatment. She works a lot, but her jobs didn’t cover my treatments. She is worrying a lot because of my condition and financial things, but we know we always will be there for each other. Me and my Mum.
