Hi, my name is Jake Donkin-Peters, I am a 17 year old student studying A Levels at Stoke Damerel Community College in Plymouth. I am asking your help to enable me to take part in an international volunteering programme, teaching English in a local school in Ghana.

In recent years I have become interested in pursuing a career in international development. Having learnt about global issues and inequalities through travel and through meeting visitors from abroad hosted at my home through the Plymouth Ghana Link, I have also leant about the importance of international cooperation and understanding especially at a person-to-person level. I am asking for your help to gain experience as a volunteer from the 3rd-24th July 2016 teaching in a local school in Ghana. This is part of an ongoing local support programme coordinated by the NGO, PlanMyGapYear.co.uk.

PMGY.co.uk is a volunteer-led organisation that is committed to providing partnership in local communities to make a longer, more sustained impact. The minimum budget for this project is around £1300 which includes £800 flights, travel, visa, vaccinations and insurance, £470 programme fees (PMGY.co.uk). I am determined to raise half of this amount myself by working part-time.

Whilst over there, I shall be based in local schools helping teach English through providing an opportunity to talk with a native English language speaker. I will also provide some enrichment with some other extra-curricular activities, for example by teaching some drama games. Any additional funds raised over the cost of flights and programme fees will be used to purchase useful resources for the classroom.

I have been fortunate to enjoy and benefit from a great education system that has the capabilities to provide lots of opportunities allowing me to follow the career path I desire and make a future for myself. Not all children growing up in developing countries such as Ghana share that same opportunity and experience. This project has been a passion of mine for a long time as I am keen to learn how to help make a difference.

Finally, I believe this project is the beginning of a life-changing experience. This opportunity will help me decide the most suitable university course and career pathway. Moreover, this initial experience will really stand as the stepping stone for me to make a bigger change in the future.

All donations made will be deeply appreciated. I will document the project with videos and images to show you that your donation has been used effectively.

If you or anybody else is interested in experiencing something similar or wish to get a better understanding of what I'm doing please follow this link: http://www.planmygapyear.co.uk/
