Hi everyone, my name is Katherine Hanna. I am a final year student nurse and on 19th June 2016 I will be travelling to Ghana to spend 4 weeks volunteering. My time will be mainly spent volunteering in a children's hospital but I am also going to visit many orphanages while I am there. Below is some information about Ghana and about what I plan to do out there!

Ghana is a developing country and many of the patients arrive at the hospitals with illnesses due to the poor sanitation and living conditions. The hospitals are extremely busy and suffer from a serious lack of resources. Many deaths in Ghana could be prevented if they had the same resources as we have here in the UK. HIV and AIDS still continues to be a major issue in Ghana and affects the lives of many Ghanaian people especially children.

Some of the people which HIV/AIDS affects are the children. The orphanages care for many children who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS amongst other diseases. Some of the children being cared for have also been abused and neglected.

I have chosen to volunteer in Ghana to gain an insight of healthcare in the developing world and as I now have some great experiences in nursing in the UK. I would like to apply my skills in Ghana to help a country in need, to build a community and to show love to the local children and families. This will be an amazing opportunity for me as a student nurse and this will benefit my education whilst I am helping those in need.

This opportunity is self funded which is why I am trying to raise £1,300 to cover flights, basic accommodation, the project, visa, vaccinations and also to enable me to take equipment and clothes to the hospital and orphanage which constantly battle with shortages of equipment.

Also, I will be looking to take baby/children's clothes and any small toys out with me so I can give them out to the children in the orphanages and hospitals. Any help at all is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, any donations are greatly appreciated!
