Rhiannon Lawton Gap Year Fundraising

My name is Rhiannon Lawton,

I am fundraising for my gap year with Frontier a non-government organisation (non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is organized on an international level).

With Frontier I aim to conserve the world’s most endangered marine wildlife and threatened habitats and build sustainable livelihoods for marginalised, under resourced communities in the world’s poorest countries. To create solutions that are forward thinking, community driven, innovative and which take into consideration the long term needs of low income communities.

My project lasts 5 months in which I will spend the first ten weeks in South East Asia. Here I will be traveling and gaining knowledge on different cultures, ways of life and become a more rounded person. I will also spend time in Cambodia where I will be teaching in a school for underprivileged children, where I will make a vital contribution to their lives. My work schedule will cover a comprehensive, varied and enjoyable teaching programme which will engage me fully with the pupils.

I will spend the next 10 weeks in Fiji where I will take an active role in marine conservation and diving. Here I will be conducting scientific baseline data surveys of reef areas. In order to gather this data, I will be diving to locate and map the extensive coral reefs and study the various communities living on them. This work provides local stakeholders, research organisations and government bodies with the information to design and implement management plans for the future protection of the Beqa island and lagoon marine ecosystem.

In order to help me achieve my target of £5,400, I will be undergoing many activities such as the Wolf Run(10km), a 100 mile bike ride in 24 hours and various other fundraising activities.
