Good health is often taken for granted by us able-bodied individuals... But what happens when our bodies start failing us and illness attacks our very will to live?
A fellow cyclist, Andre Vermaak, a man with an amazing appetite for life was struck a heavy blow when terminal disease caused organ failure and ultimately his death in the prime of his life.
With no help in sight, Abundant Life (www.abundantlifevic.org) came to the fore to assist Andre and his family in those traumatic times to restore calm and dignity in his final journey of life.
Abundant Life is an amazing organisation desperate for funding and support (including volunteers). They specialise in giving support to organ failure patients in the palliative care field. Run by Sister Pitout and Dr. Cupido, their dream is to establish an "Abundant Life" at all hospitals throughout the country (South Africa). Very little emphasis is focused on the final stages of life ie. Palliative Care in relation to Pediatrics... Maybe not what we want to think or talk about but certainly an issue we will all have to ultimately deal with.
In a bid to shed light on this incredible cause I will participate in the Nedbank Desert Dash on 11 December 2015 (http://www.desertdashnamibia.com), a 369 km, 24 hour endurance race from Windhoek to Swakopmund across the world's oldest desert.
When my legs are jelly and my will is wavering, its the incredible work Abundant Life do that will serve as my motivation.
All funds will be used to promote and assist Abundant Life in their most compassionate of endeavours.
We urge you to support this incredibly worthy cause, every $ helps!!!!
