It's been three months since the last time I heard his beautiful voice. It’s been three months since I saw him full of laughter and happiness. From then since now I’m still waiting for him to totally come back. He’s my dad. His name is Roberto "Dodong" Rioz Laguerta, a 51-year old tricycle driver, married with 2 children. He suffered sudden severe headache, weakness then loss of consciousness while assisting in lifting a heavy object. July 5, 2015 Sunday, my dad was diagnosed with a sub-arachnoid hemorrhage secondary to ruptured interior communicating artery aneurysm, in layman's term, a brain aneurysm. We went to the Emergency Room of the first hospital, Metropolitan Medical Center for his tracheal intubation and transferred immediately to Intensive Care Unit for further observations. My family was advised to expect the worse, for him to be severely brain damaged or possibly even die. CT scans were made and the doctor’s decision was to undergo my dad for a clipping operation. We decided to transfer my dad to another hospital because we cannot afford the cost of the operation. Our three days stay gave us a hospital bill of P 127,090.06. I applied for a promissory note so I can transfer my dad immediately to another hospital. It was a matter of life and death. On the second hospital, University of Santo Tomas Hospital, my dad stayed in ICU for three weeks. He had stroke and only an eye movement can be seen. His eyes were open but he was like staring into space. He didn’t recognize us. The urgent operation was delayed for so many times due to complications such as fever, infections and brain injury. For those three weeks of long waiting we only hoped that dad will keep on fighting. Since we stayed in a charity room, the medicines had to be bought in cash basis. The medicines cost more than P15,000.00 and the laboratories cost more than P5,000.00 daily. I asked help from social networks since the doctor advised us that the treatment will cost P400,000.00. I borrowed money from my relatives and friends too. July 23, 2015 seven hours of waiting, finally the clipping operation and tracheotomy were done already. Thank God the operation was a success! Three days after, we moved to a ward room for his recovery. We were also advised to undergo rehabilitation at the hospital. Too bad we cannot afford the session, for obvious reasons... it is expensive. August 4, 2015 we are ready for discharge. Our bill was P 229,598.75. I really didn’t know where to get this large amount of money. I applied for PCSO's help for indigents like us. Blessed to be given P 100,000.00 and paid directly the hospital. And since my dad was my mom’s dependent of her Philhealth account, we got discount in the amount of P21,000.00. Our final bill at UST Hospital dropped to P 108,598.75. And with our previous Promissory Noted bill at Metropolitan Hospital, our new hospital bills totaled P 235,688.81. This time as a daughter, wanting to see my dad live normally again and leave my mom stress-free (from thinking of our financial issues), I ran for help by borrowing money from people I know. Thank God again that we were finally discharged from the hospital.

As of now, October 11, 2015 we’re staying at home. My family is currently facing an incredible financial burden for my dad's treatments and recovery costs. Monthly, we need the following: supplies cost of P5,000.00, supplement/maintenance cost of P21,200.00, home service therapy cost of P7,000.00 and medicines cost of P1,800.00. This has been the biggest life trial our family has encountered and I am determined to surpass it. I really hope to extend my dad's life... to see that one day soon he can share happiness and joy to other people once again. We, his family are remaining positive and working to give him the recommended treatment. The doctors said the supplement gives stroke survivors better chance of repairing their neurological deficits and recovering a maximum of their lost motor and cognitive capabilities. Again with much humility, my bleeding heart appeals for your kindness to help us raise funds for follow-up care, medication, rehabilitation, etc. for a year. I’m Rachelle Jam Laguerta, his unica hija, 26 years old. We always have the strongest father-daughter bonding. Our closeness cannot be measured by anything. I will do everything for him. As a daughter I am focused in bringing back my father’s joy once more but I would still need people with kind and generous hearts like you to make it happen. Thank you very much for finding time to read this long article. I pray that more will touch our lives again the way our lives have been touched the first time we asked for help. God bless!

Little by little progress

Update posted by Rachelle Jam Laguerta at 01:37 pm

Hi everyone, here's an update on my dad's condition. Today is the fourth month since the day we were discharged from the hospital. I am glad that there's a little by little progress on my daddy's condition. He's right arm is moving up and down and his right leg now. . . . .
