Hi everyone! Thank you for your interest in helping me fund this amazing opportunity. I was selected to represent Guatemala at the One Young World Summit in Thailand this year. I need your immense help to get there. It is the only platform that gathers bright young leaders of 190 countries to solve world issues and have tangible impact in our home countries. We debate, formulate and share innovative global solutions. Our counsellors, such as Kofi Annan (Former UN Secretary General), Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate), Bill Clinton (Former US President), Sir Richard Branson (Founder of Virgin Group), Arianna Huffington (Huffington Post), and Jaime Oliver (Chef and Food Activist) guide us every step of the way to inspire change.
The main issues we are going to address this year are: Education; Environment; Global Business; Human Rights; Leadership & Government; Peace & Security.
Guatemala has been under-represented at this Summit. This is the chance for me to show the world how youth is changing the country as a whole and with projects that are shaping it. Guatemala and the region have had their share of problems regarding the six points mentioned above (and more). Currently, it is undergoing its worse political crisis during its short thirty-year democratic period. Attending this Summit and being a delegate speaker will create international awareness of the situation and how corruption has hindered its development. However, it will create stimulus of how we are demanding transparency. With the majority of Guatemalans being ‘young’ and dissatisfied with the way the country is today, I am truly committed in bringing back the necessary tools to lift this country out grounds and empower all the population who believe and strongly want a renovated Guatemala. Currently, I am Founder and Director of Eat Better Wa’ik, an organization dedicated to create food awareness regarding malnutrition in Guatemala. Attending the Summit will enable me to create global alliances, new ideas, donors, and future investors regarding access to food, information, education, budget constraints, and nutritional values in order to improve the intellectual capacity and physical development of malnourished population. Today, a pilot project is underway with 104 kids and twenty parents, undertaking the interactive and innovative workshop methodology I developed. Also, I am taking part in improving the meals of an entire public elementary school. I believe in a bottom-up approach: a healthy person can have great skills and abilities to overcome poverty traps.
My incentive to develop the organization are 5 main points:
- Passion for nutrition since I was a kid (eating right and different than other kids). I need to balance very carefully what I eat because of weight and cholesterol fluctuations.
- Nutrition based poverty trap – Poor Economics by A. Banerjee and E. Duflo – my most esteemed book.
- Work field trip where a mother was feeding her baby soda. I asked her why she was doing so. She replied because it was more expensive: A misconception that if something is more expensive, then it must be better.
- Organizations fighting undernutrition with malnutrition
- Unaware food habits not appropriate for kids, eg. Two year olds drinking coffee because it is what is available at their homes (parents drink it).
I greatly appreciate your contribution, since I am here to make an impact, locally and globally. One Young World has given me the chance, you can give the wings to get there.
Thank you!
