Background

Between 2008 and 2011, Laura Smith, an artist and volunteer with the NGO FUNDAHMER, worked closely with the amazing women of the community of Sacacoyo in El Salvador.  In 2005, these women formed a committee dedicated to improving their lives and the lives of the people around them. They have worked together tirelessly since then, and with the support of Laura and FUNDAHMER,, they learned the art of making sweets, other edibles and artisan’s goods such as greeting cards and baskets.  By selling these products, they have created a source of income for the 12 women on the committee and have established a humanitarian aid fund for the people in their community. Their work, remarkable as it is, has only just begun.

Our Goal

The women's committee's current focus is the construction of a commercial kitchen, which will allow them to obtain authorization from the Ministry of Health to expand their sales distribution to a wider market and increase the support that they bring to the community and their families. Our team is working in conjunction with FUNDAHMER and RISES (Running in Solidarity with El Salvadorans) to construct a commercial kitchen for this women's committee.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to involve our own local community in this initiative. We are inspired and moved by the women's committee's commitment to this work and hope that you will be too! We appreciate your support and hope you will partner with the women of Sacacoyo as they build a foundation for women's empowerment and a more sustainable & prosperous future.

A Note from the Women's Committee of Sacacoyo

"For the past years, we have been organizing ourselves and learning to create and think as a group of women while intending to break the barriers that have kept us in marginalization for so long: illiteracy, shyness, discrimination and the lack of space that we have in which to enrich our abilities and skills in order to support our families and community...Our ability to organize and believe in ourselves serves as inspiration for other women and our sons and daughters...We are rediscovering ourselves and learning to feel good about who we are as Salvadoran women. With your support, we generate alternative modes of income that allow us to develop ourselves from within and to continue building a different image of the Salvadoran woman."

A Note about Payment
