Joy and Eve came into our life on Monday, February 18th. Our family went to four animal shelters this day and instantly fell in love with Joy and Eve. We had planned on finding one dog that we would adopt into our family. However, when we saw these two girls we knew we couldn't separate them from each other. The volunteers at the shelter told us that they had been turned in by their owner and she told them that they were sisters from the same litter. It was very obvious that these girls were inseparable. They cuddle each other and are always together.

So, that Wednesday we went back to the shelter and brought the girls home with us. They are the perfect dogs for us! They love the boys and the boys love them. And John is by far their favorite. John can't go anywhere or sit down with the two of them right by his side.

DIAGNOSIS

We were given a coupon to have a free exam at Banfield and we scheduled that. We went in with all 3 boys thinking this would be a quick exam and we would be in and out. We wanted to get them started on heartworm preventatives and agreed to have them tested before they would prescribe the meds. I didn't think anything of it until the vet came back into the tiny exam room to tell us that both girls tested positive.

It was a whirlwind of information about what the treatment consisted of and the cost. I had always heard it cost a lot but had no idea it cost that much! I called around to many local vets to get estimates of their cost and sure enough, everyone pretty much cost the same.

We left devastated and confused. We had budgeted for these dogs but not sick dogs. We talked about all of our options and I cried a lot of tears. I made a promise to Joy and Eve the first night they were at our house that they were home and nothing was going to happen to them. They never had to worry about going back to the shelter again. I know that was a promise to a dog but that was a promise I wasn't going to break.

TREATMENT

So, here we are, with two of the sweetest dogs ever and a lot of upcoming vet bills. The treatment is going to be a slow kill method and it's not going to be easy. They will first run some tests to find out how bad the heartworms are and then we will start them on antibiotics and antihistamines. They will have one injection of the poisen that will kill some of the worms and then thirty days later have a series of two more injections to kill the rest of the worms. They have remain crated the whole time so they aren't active. We have to try to keep their heart rate as low as possible. And if anyone knows our house, it is not a very calm environment. Our plan is to get a bigger crate and keep them in our bedroom.

COST

Banfield is probably slightly more expensive than other places but since we know nothing about animals we have decided this is the best route for us. Their treatment plan is the cadilac of treatments. I know they will hold our hand the whole time and we will be very well taken care of. We are enrolling both dogs into one of their wellness plans that is all inclusive and will cover most of the cost. The cost for the first dog is approximately $1,000 and the second dog is $900. There will be other expenses along they way as well.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Any donation, big or small, will be a huge help. All money raised will go directly to the treatment of Joy and Eve. We want these girls to grow old with us and we want them to have the healthiest life possible. I am going to keep my promise and I'm having faith that we will be ok financially.
