Diamond A. Nelson, Miss FASHIONETTA Debutante

Miss FASHIONETTA® is a scholarship program and debutante cotillion designed to prepare and support high school students on their road to college and beyond. It is presented by AKA-Lade Foundation, Incorporated, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization and the philanthropic arm of the Lambda Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated established in 2006. 

One of the only events of its kind in the Metropolitan Chicago area, the cotillion culminates a series of educational and cultural activities that foster academic achievement and social responsibility. The FASHIONETTA® experience encourages and highlights the achievements of high school juniors and seniors, and offers an opportunity to earn college scholarships.

Leading up to that special night, debutantes and their escorts embark on a journey of events and activities to broaden their perspectives educationally, socially and culturally. Participation is not only a life-changing experience, but also an opportunity to be part of a rich legacy that spans decades.

All proceeds raised from the event are used to support programs and activities that promote academic excellence and empower communities.  Funds are also awarded in the form of college scholarships to help students secure access to higher education, one of the key components to success.

AKA-Lade and Lambda Alpha Omega have awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships to deserving Chicago-area youth.

Diamond Alyssa Nelson

2014 Miss FASHIONETTA® Debutante

Diamond Alyssa Nelson is a junior at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Illinois.  Her academic efforts are demonstrated through her current GPA of 3.967. She is an honor-roll student with distinction enrolled in both regular and honors-level courses.

Diamond’s extra curricular activities include badminton and representing her class in the 2013 TF South Powder Puff Football game.  She also volunteers as a math tutor.  Outside of school, Diamond volunteers her time participating in community service activities through her church and other social organizations to help feed and clothe the homeless.

Diamond plans to attend Duke University in Durham North Carolina where she will major in their pre-med program aspiring to continue her studies at the Duke University School of Medicine to potentially become a general surgeon.
