Our daughter was born 8 years ago with Down syndrome which causes mild to moderate mental retardation. At 5 months old she had to have open heart surgery to repair a heart defect, during the surgery she had a collapsed lung that extended the time of the surgery and the amount of time on the bypass machine which caused some possible brain damage. At the age of 2 she developed arthritis and autism (which is a neurologic disorder causing brain defects). The autism took almost every skill she had away and we had to start over. She lost the ability to speak, eat, crawl and many more things that she has still not recovered. All 3 of these brain assaults have caused her to be very delayed and extremely behind her peers of the same age. At age 8 she functions at less than a 2 year old does and is still not potty trained. At her recent Individualized Education Program testing her IQ was said to be at 31 which is at the very low end of the scale. Although she can now walk, talk (1 or 2 words at a time) and give big bear hugs she struggles with some of the basic things like feeding herself, asking for help to go to the bathroom, and many many more things. People with autism and Down syndrome sometimes have things called brain spikes that are like mini seizures and cause their brains to stall (or get stuck). This is why she learns more slowly than an average person and has so many behavior problems. Although she does learn, having both of these disorders puts her at a major disadvantage in life and makes life very challenging for her and her whole family. We found a doctor here in Utah who does something called Neurofeedback which is a form of brain training (almost like re-wiring). Neuofeedback has been shown in kids with her disorders to improve memory, attention, behavior and may even help her walk better. There is even evidence that with diligence many kids with her disorders can perform simple mathematical equations, achieve some level of reading and may even be able to write her own name. The data shows that there is a possible jump in IQ between 9 and 24 points and sometimes even more! All of these things would be a mini miracle in her and our lives! If she could have even a 9 point jump in her IQ she would be able to feed herself completely, learn to go to the bathroom on her own and have some sense of independence and pride in herself. Then if the jump was high enough she could enjoy a more typical life where reading and math skills are required. She is such a loving and sweet girl she deserves to have a better life. We are happy with any increase in brain function and skills that she can acquire through this therapy and would be grateful for any help in making this happen for her. All of her past medical issues have put our family into a financial hardship and coming up with these additional funds to help her is almost impossible without help. Unfortunately this service is NOT covered by any insurance. Here is a wonderful short video that will explain how the whole thing works.  It is very exciting!  http://www.eeginfo.com/neurofeedback-videos-media.htm

Update posted by Vegmom at 01:30 pm

Well between offsite donations and those through this site we were able to get started.  After our initial consultation with the Dr where we discussed her current abilities, issues and where we would like to see improvement we then scheduled the brain map.  You can see here in this picture
