A school 15 miles west of Moshi in the middle of a desert needs help.  The students can’t afford to eat at school, especially while there is a water shortage in their area.  There are 150 students attending the school.  There are three classrooms each with 50 students. The chalkboards are much different than the white boards at Nativity and the chalk is so worn down that the students and teachers are practically writing with their fingertips. Each of the classroom floors is made of cement. The floors have seen better days and the surface is starting to chip off due to all the usage. As I said earlier, there are only three classrooms so you can imagine how big the school is.  We will be helping the students because they barely eat anything throughout the day. Most students have chai tea for breakfast; very insufficient especially knowing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Then the students don’t eat anything for lunch.  So you can imagine how hungry they would be at the end of the day.  Please help me raise the funds to buy these children lunch for a year.   Sincerely, Sam

Mlima Public Primary School Project: School Lunch Program

Purpose:  To provide corn and beans for lunch daily for one school year for 150 students at Mlima public school in Mlima, Tanzania.

Cost: $1500 per year

Duration:  one school year; start anytime

Description:  West of Moshi and Mount Kilimajaro in Northern Tanzania, the land is very arid and receives little annual rainfall. Because of the lack of available water, families are often unable to grow sufficient food for themselves to eat.  In addition, public schools in Tanzania require an annual allotment of beans and corn (in kilograms) to be provided to the school by the family for each student in attendance.  Mlima school is not receiving the “required” beans and corn from the students’ families, because the families barely have enough to feed themselves.  Therefore, students at school are not fed during the day. The school day lasts from 8am to 3pm, and sustaining learning on an empty stomach is very difficult.  Mlima public school has 150 students and 5 teachers who would greatly benefit from a donation of corn and beans.  The local Tanzanian government is aware of the problem, but has no immediate plans with solutions.

Materials: 20 x 1kg bag of corn, 10 x 1kg bag of beans, 100L oil, 150g sugar and 2 cartons of salt All food to be purchased locally and delivered to the school.  The school will store the food on-site and use throughout the year.
