Polly is my daughters african grey parrot, her baby, she's the first person she speaks to in the morning and the last before she goes to bed.  She's had her about 20 years, maybe more, and she noticed on Tuesday night she had been quieter than usual, but still seemed okay on Wednesday.   She didn't eat much and slept most of the day, couldn't get a appointment until the Thursday, there are no local vets who deals with exoctic birds in our area.  She tried contacting the pdsa and the sspca and no one could help.   The sspca wanted her to hand over Polly but she wouldn't have got her back.

I got a appointment at a vets 65 miles away and we took her yesterday to get her treatment (lawrie veterinary Group in cumbernauld) they specalize in african greys... She is totally devastated not to mention her kids 17 and 9.  the vets bills going to be approximately £800-£1000 and she's not working just now as she was paid of due to ill health.  so money's tight for her.  Polly is very seriously ill and my daughter was told to take each hour as it comes, no news is good news.  She phoned twice last night and twice today to get updates and been told she's in an incubator, getting calcium and glucose injections, blood taken, being hand fed and constantly on a drip to give her fluids.  This will all add up daily, not to mention the day and night fees for keeping her in? plus phone calls and travel costs. Last time Polly was ill it cost her the best part of £600 for all her treatment.   Sadly this time it's more serious.  Funds will go towards  the cost of the stay, calcium Injections, drip everything basically. Hoping to raise as much as possible by asking  all my friends, her friends and family on Facebook if they can contribute anything at all, every little bit helps, to help her pay her fees as she doesn't want to give up on her till they tell her it's time to let her go.   I hope you understand why I'm asking and not hold it against me and even if you can't donate personally, please share to all your family and friends, twitter & Facebook. Thanks!

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for even reading my story.

Sad news

Update posted by Karen Wilson at 03:45 am

I'm sad to say I got some shocking news, Polly passed away last night. The vet phoned to say when he was feeding her she chocked and died, he gave her adrenaline and tried to revive her but sadly didn't make it. I'm so shocked as I didn't expect it

  • Hi thank you so much, yes we tried the pdsa but because she's not registered with them we have to pay for all treatment first, as she needs to be registered. Also there is no local pdsa vets that can treat parrots in our area. It's very sad as my daughter is worried she runs out of money for treatment. 41 that's a great age ! That's the oldest parrot I've heard of so far. Again thank you!

  • I hope she is well soon and you raise the money. My Gran had an African Grey, she's 41 years old now and in the care of Birdline as my Gran is no longer with us. Her living costs are covered by my Aunt but they may be able to help or provide support. Have you tried the PDSA? Good luck xo
