Half Marathon - DONE

Update posted by Evie Douglas

Just thought I'd give you a quick update on challenge progress!

Yesterday I successfully completed the Edinburgh Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon! It was extremely tough, particularly as I've been out of training for the past few weeks due to shin splints, but I'm chuffed to have made it (even if I can't move today because my legs are so sore!!)!

Unfortunately it was a typical Scottish day - pouring with rain and winds of up to 37mph, causing delays at the starting line and generally a rather arduous run. I found myself soaked through and dreading the 13.1 miles before the race had even begun!

The Seafield Promenade stretch seemed to go on and on...the wind and rain was blowing directly in our faces and it made for a very unpleasant section of the course! It was a good feeling reaching the end of it and finding shelter amonst buildings again!

I was extremely grateful that my dad and Jill joined me for the final 6 miles to give me some company and keep me going! It gave me a boost of energy that I really needed!

Although the weather was awful I enjoyed turning into the centre of town for the last 5 miles or so. The volunteers and spectators were fab and helped to keep a smile on my face despite the aching shins, tiredness, cold and rain! I particularly enjoyed the "encouragement" from one man standing at the Meadows who repeatedly shouted "well done guys, you're almost at the finish line and then you never ever ever have to run again!!"

I completed the course in under 2 and a half hours, drenched, muddy and knackered! Sadly it was just half an hour or so after I'd finished when the sun made an appearance and it turned into a beautifully sunny day...not impressed! Despite the poor conditions though it was a brilliant experience and I'd definitely consider doing it again (...well after a nice long rest period that is!)

In other news my dad and I did a test flight for our microlight challenge last thursday and we're looking good to go as soon as all of the paperwork is checked off! Just have to keep fingers crossed for some nice weather!

Finally I'd like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all those who have sponsored me! I really appreciate your support and kind words of encouragement!

If you haven't already done so it's not too late to donate so please give anything you can!

Thanks again everyone!

Evie Dee
