Update 14

Update posted by Silvo Scruffy

Hi everyone!

Yesterday we took Scruffy for his check-up after two weeks of antibiotic treatment to see if the infection in his bladder had cleared up. Unfortunately, his bladder was the size of a pea. The vet was unable to obtain a urine sample, even after we tried to give him water via syringe.

The vet, after listening to us describe his symptoms and noting that it was not improving much after medication, told us that it was time to consider surgery for Scruffy to remove his bladder stones. The medication route might not be a long-term solution, because the bacteria might evolve and outsmart the antibiotics, which would cause an even bigger problem. Also, the bladder stones will continue to cause physical irritation and increase the risk of further infection.

(look at his blep. it's become a bleeeeeeeeeep)

The surgery would involve cutting along his abdomen, lifting the bladder out, removing the stones and then flushing it with lots of saline water. We have the option of fixing his hernia at the same time. The surgery would also allow them to get a swab, determining exactly what kind of bacteria was growing in his bladder, and therefore exactly what kind of antibiotics he needed.

However, even after surgery, it might not guarantee that his symptoms will improve. His bladder wall has been inflamed for so long, and it may or may not make a difference.

Scruffy is scheduled for a heart ECG on 14 Jan to see exactly what the issue with his heart is. This would give us a better idea of the anesthetic risk involved. For now, he doesn't need to take any medication (Hooray for him!) Scruffy is also scheduled for a grooming session on 6 Jan to be a real clean boi :))
