Update 10 February 2020

Update posted by Trevor Schoonraad

Thank you so much for the overwhelming support from you all. We really appreciate the support, prayers, the messages and donations from friends, family, colleagues and caring strangers all over the world. From all over South Africa to Chicago, London and Queensland.

The results from the first round of chemo was not good news and it seems that she did not respond to the treatment.

Her platelets and white blood cells are still not increasing and she is still receiving platelets every 3 days in addition to blood transfusions on a weekly basis.

Carmen has been fighting infections and fever for more than a month now with broad based antibiotics.

The latest blood culture confirmed that Carmen has a severe blood infection and now more targeted antibiotics can be administered in order to manage the infection.

Once the infection clears up, Carmen will receive her second round of chemo. So far the plan is for next week.

In general Carmen is very tired and her will is slipping. She has been prescribed an antidepressant to cope with her depression, the confinement to hospital and all the associated emotions of constantly receiving treatment.

She had sonars of all her organs including a heart sonar and all seems to be in order.

We try and keep her occupied with arts & craft, her school work and updates on what is happening at home.

Carmen has a game she now calls the “gist” list of all her treating doctors.

So far we have Oncologist, Pathologist, Radiologist, Micro Biologist, Haematologist, Cardiologist, Physiotherapist and Psychiatrist.

We would like to thank the doctors for their dedication in treating Carmen.

We take it hour by hour, day by day and hope for the best.
