16 days campaign: “Generation Equality: Stands Against Rape”

Update posted by Isobel Acquah

We are so excited to have 2% funded already. Thank you so much for partnering with us to make this project come to life!!

25th November will mark the start of the 16 day global campaign!!

Every year, the United Nations (UN) runs a global campaign over 16 days to advocate for an end to violence against women. There continues to be widespread impunity on sexual violence and rape, and, as a result, the UN Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, has decided that the next two years the UNiTE Campaign will focus on a rape as a specific form of harm committed against women and girls, both in times of peace and war.

This year, the 16 days commences on 25th November - the Day for the Elimination of violence against Women and ends on the International day of Human Rights, 10th December under the theme: “Generation Equality: Stands Against Rape”. Rape is a very specific physical form of violence against women and girls that is rooted in a complex set of patriarchal beliefs, power and control which become normalised if not confronted.

In recent years, the voices of survivors and activists have been heard through campaigns such as #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc. In Ghana, the Pearl Safe Haven team has been vocal in our stand against gender-based violence, using the hashtags #NoSilence #NoShame and #LovedoesnotHit.

Support the campaign from Monday 25th November and follow us on @pearlsafehaven - you can share the images on your profiles and social media handles to stand in support of vulnerable women!
