Endless Hope/ 99 Days To Go

Update posted by James Ouma

With just 99 days to go, I don't know what or how to feel. I have fought and lost so many battles there are times the momentum of moving forward is what keeps me going. Deep down I know that Christ has my back covered and that the dreams I have for the Half Way Cycle are possible to achieve, much as they seem lofty.

This will be the second time a team of friends and I will be cycling across Kenya to raise funds for Lifesong Kenya's REAM Program. It is one thing to work with at risk male teens who are in conflict with the law. It is a completely different story when you seek to cycle to raise funds for the program.

The first time we did this, things didn’t work out according to plan, at least not the way I had planned or anticipated. This year, I am determined to keep going.

But first I must deal with the past. Thoughts keep crossing my mind. I consider the heavy weight I have been carrying on my weary shoulders I think about the successes I have had with the many boys who have been reconciled with their families.

I think about the cases that have been dropped after the Lifesong Kenya team intervened. While others seem to breeze through barriers with ease, I seem to get stuck in a rut. I have questioned why I can't stop doing this.

More people have given up on me. Some think I have lost my mind by wanting to cycle again. Most no longer pick my phone calls. Most believe I am fighting a lost cause and that the boys who are in conflict with the law deserve to face the consequences. They deserve to pay for their sins, for the wrongs and the hurt they have caused in the community..

Then I remember what Christ said. That all things are working to for the good for those who trust and believe in Him. Though I don’t see it, I believe our cycling will achieve its target of raising the amount we need for next year. My wife and I, and a few friends of ours have helped us come this far. However, we need more resources and funding.

That's why I will pick up my helmet, grab my bike and keep pedaling. My journey is far from over. It is just beginning. And I need you to come along.
