SaveAHepBNeonate

Update posted by Emmanuel Yao Agozie

SaveAHepBNeonate is a campaign that came about as a result of my field of work. I currently work in the clinical setting (mostly with Hepatitis B expectant mothers) and have come to realize on my visits to several hospitals, clinics and maternity homes that majority of expectant mothers who have chronic hepatitis B have difficulty getting the Hepatitis B Immunoglobulins for their babies who are expected to receive this product within 12 hours of birth. These mothers, even though they are educated immediately they are found to be positive for the Hep B virus and the need for them to start preparing for the purchase of this immunoglobulin that will protect their babies from contracting the virus from them after birth (the most common way of babies contracting the virus), most of them fail to come up with the required funds to purchase this product. Some also fail to see the great need for these products which are life-savers and will prefer to take their babies home without any prophylaxis hoping nothing will go wrong.

This got me thinking of how to get help for this group of patients and after some little research, I chanced upon this option which will help get this all important product into all hospitals that I currently cover for this special group of patients (who cannot afford these products).

It looks like a long shot, but I believe we need to start from somewhere since every single life that is saved through this campaign counts!!!

Research shows that any baby born to mothers who have the virus have an 80-90% chance of contracting Chronic Hepatitis B infection and about 15 - 25% of these babies will die from liver failure and liver cancer.

As we say in Ghana, no contribution is too small or too big!
