Today we celebrate the independence of Timor-Leste . Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger were in Indonesia the day before the massive invasion of this beloved half island. Then followed 24 years of brutal military genocide in which one third of the population died. Every family suffered. But they persisted and never surrendered to the inevitable. I was present for the last two years of this epic brave struggle and saw innumerable catastrophic injuries. The ultimate victory sets an example unmatched in modern history.
