Rest in peace, Liliana

Update posted by Bairo Pite Clinic

16 year old Liliana suffered from rheumatic and had been coming to Bairo Pite Clinic ever since she was a young child. She was one of the many patients who were dependent upon the life saving services we provide.

Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the staff at Bairo Pite Clinic, Liliana passed away on the 4th of May 2019 due to complications of rheumatic heart disease.

Rheumatic Heart Disease kept her from doing many of the things other healthy children her age can do. Ordinary activities, such as going to school, or playing outside with friends, were made difficult or impossible for Liliana because of her condition.

She suffered from constant shortness of breath and chest pains, and has had long stays at the clinic. Recently, she spent 6 months out of a year in Bairo Pite Clinic to receive the life saving treatment that prevented her from going into cardiac failure.

Her disease is entirely preventable when diagnosed and treated early with antibiotics. What starts off as a sore throat does not need to progress to Rheumatic Heart Disease. However, in a country such as Timor Leste, heath care is not widely accessible, especially in remote villages such as Liliana’s.

Whilst it is too late for Liliana, part of our effort goes towards mobile clinics. We visit villages like Liliana's to screen and treat for medical conditions like hers, so others will not suffer as she did

Liliana is only one of the stories we can tell you about - there are many other such cases. Without funding support, the clinic will be forced to close down.

Please consider donating today, and help change the lives of those like Liliana.
