Monkey is the second cat at Onan Road who crossed the rainbow bridge. The first one, Shadow, got hit by a car a few months back. Monkey’s passing is particularly hard on us because we thought and hoped that he would pull through. He only came to our street towards the end of September last year. I guess we only wish that we were able to help him sooner and that we had more time.

Monkey’s our grumpy grandpa but he always made sure we knew he appreciated the food and water we gave him. He crossed the street every night to greet me and meowed as if to tell me I’m late and he’s very hungry. The night we took him to the vet, despite the pain and discomfort he was feeling, he came to his usual corner. He rubbed his body against my legs and even let me pet him. Looking back, I think he knew the end was near and he was saying good bye.

We only find solace in the thought that he no longer suffers and is now free from pain. But we are going to miss him so much. We were his friends and family even for a short bit of time, our street his safe place and home.
