RIP Alex

Update posted by Carrie Hale

We hate to have to break this news, but Alex was put to sleep today. It was discovered by East Lancashire Cats' trusted vet that his spine has been fractured all this time and this is likely what caused the severe nerve damage that, mercifully, allowed him to feel no pain. Until the very end Alex was happy and carefree. In addition to the bladder issues caused by the nerve damage, Alex also had no bowel control and was not eliminating poo properly so would have required constant enemas in addition to the bladder expression in order to stay alive and this is simply no life for a cat.

We feel very lucky to have met him despite everything and we know how much he touched everyone who heard of what had happened to him. Everybody's donations were certainly not made in vain; the funds will of course be staying with East Lancashire Cats, helping them to continue their work saving desperate kitties who have no other chance.

While it may feel that we failed Alex, we hope that he has at least helped to raise awareness for East Lancashire Cats as they seem to be fighting a never ending battle trying to right wrongs caused by human indifference. Please let's remember that nobody is any more deserving of life and fair treatment than anybody else. No animal exists to be used or neglected by humans whether they are cat, dog or bunny; chicken, fish or pig. Respect for ALL animals, not just human ones. RIP Alex.
