Aya: First Month, First Embrace

Update posted by Jencel Marie Marcial-Anguluan

Aya is already a month old (as of yesterday, Jan 9) and now weighs 1kg. Finally, we were allowed to do KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care)! A month late, but at last we finally had our Unang Yakap (Unang Yakap - EINC).

She woke up after being placed on my chest. Maybe she was surprised by the sudden change: my heartbeat, my clearer voice, my warm skin. It was also surprising for me, she was so tiny and featherlike, I was afraid I will break her. I didn't dare try to breastfeed (though her neonatologist said I could try), not yet, she still needed help with the oxygen sometimes and I directly place the oxygen funnel on her face when O2 levels become low. However, she removed her NGT again so maybe she's sort of telling me she's ready to direct latch (she hates that tube!).

I blindly took a photo of her while on my chest, check out the close up photo (parang pang UNICEF postcard!). I accidentally hit her head with my phone cover and she wailed in surprise. My heart dropped but I recovered quickly. 😅 First month, first time to be in a 'cellphone accident' and it may happen a few more times in the future. I consider this another funny story to tell her soon!

Good friend and fellow breastfeeding counselor MP Manacio visited us too and gave me a lactation massage (there is a breastfeeding room at the 3f of the hospital). Thank you for this gift and the chika!

There will be other tests to be done to Aya (brain scan and eye check) and will update you as soon as I have news. Thank you for your prayers and support! 💗

Love,

Mommy Jeng
