Diary of a guide dog applicant part one

Update posted by Cassandra Chiu

Journey of applying for a Guide Dog part 1

Guide Dogs do not come ready trained, off the shelf waiting for the right blind person to come along and take them home. They are bred and born to play this important role, and then puppy raised for a year, before formally entering full time Guide Dog training for another 6-8months. They will be about 2 years of age before they are matched with a human and further trained as a team of dog and human.

The timeframe or wait list for a Guide Dog for the human can take up to a year. I started the conversation with Guide Dogs Victoria a few months ago, and it is my turn soon to be assessed for the right dog guide, I am scheduled to have my assessment later this week.

Thanks for being a part of this journey, and supporting this campaign. Will update again as soon as I have completed the assessment.
