Gortex Graft (PTFE)

Update posted by George Scopelitis

Sherryl was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease secondary to Chronic Glomerulonephritis and underwent emergency hemodialysis (HD) thru an Internal Jugular or IJ (in the neck) the next day when the laboratory results showed her Creatinine level was 1,200μmol/L. An AV fistula was created on her right arm the following day. When a bruit could be felt at her AV fistula, hemodialysis was started thru that access point and her IJ was removed. Twice a week, for almost 3 years now, she dragged herself to the hospital for every session.

Dialysis is a harrowing experience. It is painful; physically, mentally and financially draining. During this course of time, she had already undergone five (5) operations for IJ and Fistula replacements due to allergic reactions and infection. Now, her access point is a Fistula created on her left arm in March 2015.

When her nephrologist urged her to consider transplantation, she felt a surge of hope rush through her, but it was short-lived, she learned that before you could undergo the operation, there are several major factors to consider, first is the source of the organ to be transplanted. He told her that if she has siblings, one of them might be a good match for her. Other relatives offered to be screened but their blood types and ages were not ideal. Her younger sister volunteered to give one of her kidneys, she went through tests and they found out they were haplotypes but they can’t go ahead with the operation right away because they still need to raise money and while they were waiting, some of her relatives were dissuading her sister from becoming her organ donor sighting medical history that runs in the family like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Her sister got scared and decided to back out. In the end, they opted for cadaver referrals through the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Human Organ Preservation Effort (HOPE) Foundation.

Another major problem was logistics; the cost of a kidney transplant operation is very prohibitive. Her family who have always been supportive of her treatment, is already drained financially, too. She's a single parent of two and has been employed by me (George Scopelitis of Northern Beaches Air Conditioning) as a Virtual Assistant since June 2014. Being the sole provider, her income is not enough to sustain their daily needs, her children’s education and her medical necessities all at once despite receiving numerous assistance from me. So, I decided to create and set up a gogetfunding page to raise funds for her. Halfway through completion, she found out from treatment a week ago that her Left Fistula has developed aneurysm and is causing elevated venous pressure.

Her surgeon confirms the danger it may post like a weakened hose, it may rupture if it becomes too large. Since a ruptured aneurysm is extremely dangerous and can cause life-threatening bleeding, it is best corrected by an operation before this happens. A recommendation that she should get a Gortex Graft (PTFE) created on either her lower left or right arm is created and her Left Fistula ligated as soon as possible. At this rate, she needs more than Php140,000.00 for this procedure the soonest time possible.

We would very much appreciate your help in any way you can. As you know, aside from this she still need to undergo a 2-times a week regular hemodialysis treatment and support her treatment with constant medication thus making her financially unstable. Thank you for taking the time to consider her situation…I pray that God will bless you more.
