ICU DAY 7

Update posted by Nivea Louwah Sermona

Last sunday, we were confident that he was getting better after he responded well to the 2 new antibiotics started last saturday plus another one added yesterday. His platelet count continued to increase & his fever was kept at bay with highest temperature recorded @ 38.2°C in 24 hours. However, his temperature started to rise again from 38.6°C @ around 4pm yesterday to 39.9°C @10pm last night. His main attending physician ordered for a blood culture & they found out that he did not completely respond to the antibiotics. His CBC result this morning also showed that his WBC count started to increase again which is a sign of a recurring infection. He is then referred to an infectionist (infectious disease specialist) to address this concern & after checking his blood culture results, the doc said "pinakangil-ad iyang kagaw" & prescribed a new pair of antibiotics. He is still sedated but he usually wakes up about an hour or two before his next dose is given.

On a positive note, nephro ordered for dialysis to be temporarily discontinued since Gabz started to pee a lot after they tried giving him diuretics again. (they can only give him diuretics when his blood pressure is stable). if his urine output remains @ a normal volume until tomorrow, dialysis will be permanently discontinued. right now we are waiting for the result of the repeat chest xray done this morning to check if his pneumonia on both lungs has cleared up. ventilator support is still on the same level since day 1 but if the xray shows better results they might start to gradually decrease his breathing support from the ventilator until he starts to breathe again on his own.
