Visiting a new student

Update posted by Marielle van de Rijt

Yesterday was a very special day for me. I was allowed to visit Do of 15, a boy who now lives with his grandmother in bad circumstances. His grandmother contacted us to help him, so we drove three hours with four volunteers to the north. Do does not know who his father is and his mother is never home because of a mental illness. Having arrived there, Do was already waiting for us at the beginning of the street and he runned with our car to his house.

The volunteers asked him about his situation, his character, fears and dreams. He was also explained a lot about the foundation and what it will all mean for him if he will become a part of Aspiration fund. He was very shy and especially because I was there as a foreigner. With the help of a translator I could also have a conversation with him. For example, I asked him how he felt now, what he was dreaming about and what he likes to do. He told me he likes football very much, and when I asked him if he often plays soccer he said he does not have a ball to play with. He also wants to learn english and become a doctor to buy a house for him and his grandmother.

After the visit we gave him books, clothes and food and now it is up to him to write a letter to the foundation. We ask him to write everything about himself, his feelings, thoughts, wishes etc. With this we give him the chance to share everything he wants without strangers and only then the fund can really get to know him better. It was a very moving experience but I am also really grateful that I can help!
