Training - 7 July hosting Goalball Singapore players

Update posted by Darren Whitbourne

Saturday 7 July training, we hosted players from Goalball Singapore. Goalball is a sport played by the visually impaired. Under 20s visited Goalball training 17 June to learn about their sport.

The u20s led the session. A key objective was to teach our sport to those that had not played touch. Secondly, provide an insight on how the u20s manage themselves off the field. This was critical to assist the Goalball players improve performance in their sport.

Introductions and warm-up performed under the hot Singapore sun. We progressed to fitness. The u20s completing full fitness. The Goalball players completing modified and shortened runs.

Passing drills, roll balls and defence followed. Goalball players quickly learnt these skills. Within a short period of time were driving confidently, stepping, swerving and passing.

Breaking into groups for games of touch. The Goalball players were now using their speed and evasion skills to beat defenders. Exceptional cover defence and cut out passes to unmarked wingers!!

The final 30 minutes was a group discussion. Each of the u20s provided an insight on player responsibility when representing Singapore. Stories were told of improving diets, sleep patterns, balancing school, self-discipline and motivation. Each of the players spoke on how they manage each of these aspects. Passing tips to the Goaball players that we hope will assist improve their performance. Gratifying to hear shared experiences by both groups.

The Goalball players taught the u20s many things. Improved communication. Clearer vocal communication. Louder calls. Resilience through difficulties. Striving for improvement by doing things differently.

Teaching our sport to the Goalball players was rewarding. The compassion, care and warmth between all players was fulfilling to watch.
