March 9

Update posted by Anastasia Akhurst

Hi everyone,

On March 1st the MCFD and John and I were in court. John and I agreed that we want to contest the order they are seeking to remove our legal guardianship temporarily. Our next date is May 28th.

Just yesterday the MCFD has arranged for us to have now 3 (2 hour) visits with Damian and the Circle of Friends worker to supervise. Visits are going well and I was able to breastfeed Damian a little bit on Monday and Thursday this week. I can't wait to see him again tomorrow. I'm in the process of enrolling John and I into a few parenting programs in order to show the MCFD that Damian is our priority and we want him to have a safe and loving home. As a registered nurse I know that we can always improve our skills and knowledge and being a parent is much the same.

Unfortunately the MCFD still will not return Damian to me even though I have a written agreement with my parents that I can live there with Damian. They say this is only because the RCMP investigation is still open/active. Unfortunately there is no time limit for their investigation and it could remain open forever. Following that line of thought would mean Damian might never be returned to me. However, I still have hope.

As I'm still in the process of waiting to hear from legal aid I have not retained a lawyer yet. Once I hear the official verdict (looking like I will not qualify because of John's income) then I will hire a family lawyer privately.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers.
