Update: Tanya`s operation and the way forward

This is where your donations makes the biggest difference – Tanya won’t be able to get the external piece (as discussed below) unless the full amount due is paid in full. Currently we are standing on just below R35k and hope to raise the outstanding R45k to ensure Tanya will be able to receive the external device.
We understand the GoGetFunding page is in dollars and via PayPal - and that some of you might have concerns, if so please feel free to contact me and ill provide you with direct banking details.

Tanya had her operation yesterday – she feels nauseous from the aesthetics and says she has a headache but other than that Andre (her husband) says she looks 100% and feels positive. The surgery was just under 5 hours and so far so good. During the procedure, the doctor exposed the mastoid bone behind the ear canal and drilled a small channel to the inner ear. The electrodes are threaded into the inner ear and the receiver coil is placed in the bone behind the ear. The skin was closed over the receiver/stimulator. A pressure bandage was placed to reduce swelling around the incision.(please see added pictures of the exray)

What next?

Tanya needs to wait 4 – 6 weeks to allow for healing. After everything is healed, “fitting” the external part takes place. “During the initial activation, the headpiece and microphone are placed over the implant. The speech processor is connected to the headpiece and the audiologist’s computer. The audiologist activates the electrodes individually and the cochlear implant user indicates when sound is detected and when it is comfortably loud. These measurements are used to program or “MAP” the speech processor for the implant recipient. The speech processor is then disconnected from the audiologist's computer and rechargeable or disposable batteries are inserted.”

Thank you so much for each donation received and every share - we are extremely grateful for the amount received from friends, family, acquaintances, work colleagues, suppliers, clients and strangers. To each one that reached out we want to say thank you. Please continue to share the page and help us reach the R80k goal.
