The Journey

Update posted by Jeandre Prinsloo

On 13 July 2016 our lives drastically changed and we never thought we would be standing here in this situation today! Prior to this Klaas had no problems except for a small bump in his neck that was only seen as a blocked spit gland nothing serious. An operation took place in June to unblock this small issue and then to the Dr’s surprise they opened up a big mess of cancerous tumour.

My brother Klaas Prinsloo then 17 was diagnosed with Stage 3 Primitive Neuro Ectodermal Tumour, also known as Ewing Sarcoma or Cancer of the nerve system. What lied ahead was 14 chemo sessions at that time and we were positive this would be enough.

In January 2017 shortly before his 18th Birthday and after 10 chemo sessions he was tested to see the progress and found that although he by then had more than 520 hours of chemo the cancer just grew more. Another operation took place to remove this and chemo was paused to have radiation. 30 sessions of radiation took place over 6 weeks and chemo was to recommence on 22 May 2017. He was admitted to hospital like before and then Drs advised they would do the tests in hospital to see the effect of the radiation etc. On the 24th May 2017 the Drs was shocked when the cancer had spread like wildfire to his bones, not to the marrow but it was growing on the bone. They found these Metastases all over, to be exact 8 on his skull, his shoulders, his lower spine, his left leg, his ribs, his clavicle and his sternum. The chemo has made him sick, made him lose weight at a rapid pace and the healthy brother I had is busy melting away.

The doctor cancelled all his treatment as they were now dealing with a new different cancer. After looking at all the results my parents were called in on Wednesday 7 June 2017 and the doctors has informed us that they can’t do anything for him anymore as they are now dealing with a Stage 4 cancer. We can only try and make him as comfortable as possible.

The sad reality for us as a family is we now need to accept that my brother can be taken from us at any second, and this truly breaks my heart in pieces as he is my life. The doctors says we are lucky if he is around for a year but we shouldn’t stare dead against that as the severity of his cancer and the way it is spreading it could be a lot sooner.

He is my baby brother and at the tender age of 18 is planning his last trip to the ocean, with tears in my eyes I ask if you can assist in any part of making this dream come true. It will literally make is his last wish come true.
