Updates on Mom and Dad

Update posted by Megumi Williams

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your support for Mom and Dad. Your donations have already helped support both Mom and Dad's health care treatment. We have raised enough with local events and the GoGetFunding campaigns to support two months for Mom's care and to assist with making their home accessible.

Updates on Dad

This Sunday Dad will be able to come home for outpatient care. The doctors have said that he is doing better than expected and that it should be safe for him to continue his recovery at home for now. He will need to frequently visit the hospital to monitor his progress.

Dad still has considerable work ahead to rebuild the interior of his mouth where he lost his jawbone and teeth. Dental work will begin once his healing has stabilized enough for them to begin work. Additionally Dad will need to undergo regular checks to evaluate his system for the presence of cancer. At this point the doctors believe they have removed it all, but warn that he must maintain regular checks to catch any recurrence quickly.

We are so happy to have Dad returning home. I think he had been going stir crazy in the hospital as he is used to doing things and staying active. Now our challenge will be to keep him resting and not overdoing it. But he will be home. And that is something truly wonderful.

Updates on Mom

Mom's news is not as good. Her progress seems to have reached a plateau. While some of her physical abilities are slowing improving, her cognitive abilities are not progressing. Additionally we feel that her current care provider is not providing adequate support and has appeared to not have an effective strategy for the future of her treatment. We are working with them to improve it.

In addition her rehab care provision will end at the five month mark. After that Mom will very likely need long term full time care. She is not independent enough to function without full time attention and care. Caring for her at home looks impossible unless she shows much more improvement in both mobility and her ability to interact.

In just practical terms she would need a strong full time care resource at home who could lift her for bathing, toilet, getting in and out of bed. This isn't something that Dad or our family can do. So we are going to need to seek out long term care for Mom, hopefully somewhere very nearby so we can spend as much time with her as we can. And more importantly, somewhere that can continue to work on her development so she can one day come home.

What's Next

We will continue to work to raise funds for Mom's long term care. We will also prepare the house for Mom to be able to spend as much time there as we can arrange for her to. At least visits.

Over Golden Week holiday we are working to open access and work on any barriers to clear them in the house. Hopefully this will make the house safer for Dad as well as for Mom if she can visit and hopefully one day come home.

Thank you to each and every one of you who donated to support Mom and Dad. Your kindness has really helped lift a burden from them and helped our family do what we need to do for them.

Thank you to you and your family from all of our family.
