A setback on Tula's road to recovery...

Update posted by Ann Turri

The end of August marks six months since our sweet rescue mare, Tula, came under the care of West Coast Ecuestre. She's continued to improve on her road to recovery but reached a plateau and started to decline recently.

Given signs of weight loss, fatigue and persistent eye issues, we ran some blood work that showed a possible systemic infection, anemia, and weakened liver. Dr. Melanie also took samples from Tula's eye and sent them out for testing to rule out a fungal eye infection (resulting pending) Tula was put on a regimen of antibiotics per the vet instruction as well as receiving a number of additional supplements to support her health.

Tula, unfortunately, suffered another setback this weekend, resulting in her transport to an emergency vet clinic for treatment and further diagnosis. We arrived at the barn to find her hemorrhaging blood from her nose and after consultation with numerous veterinarians we determined that her life required a transport to the emergency vet clinic for treatment. We are super grateful to the Carlo family, Nani and Mara Carlo for arranging transport immediately.

When Tula arrived in Hatillo she was given IV fluids immediately and blood was drawn to try to determine the cause behind the hemorrhage and health issues. She was also given an endoscopy to rule out the possibility of a gutteral pouch infection and to determine the source of bleeding.

As of now, she is going into her second night at the emergency clinic, is stable, receiving nourishing IV fluids, and is in very good hands. We are grateful to have ruled out the worst case scenarios but are awaiting a concrete diagnosis so we can properly assist her FULL and THRIVING recovery. Tula is a fighter, and our community to pulled together to help save her. We are confident she can conquer this!

That being said, her veterinary bills, hospital stay and continued recovery will be quite expensive, and our small operation (and Tula) would be immensely appreciative for any financial support and love sent her way!
