From our lovely Pixie late last night:

"To all of you delicious darling kittens: I, I, i, .i, yes, that's me stuttering.... This entire day has pretty much given me a speech impediment. I cannot even quantify my gratitude. Really, I am very ill equipped with words to even begin to describe what you have done for my brother and I. What began as casual Facebook status rant about the insane cost of funerals, has, by the hand of the Angels (known as Molly, Judith and Jen B.) been completely been turned on its head.

Thank you.

This has been one of the heaviest months of my life, and by the miracle of yourselves, been turned into lightness. Dealing with the loss of a parent/close relative is one thing, but then to be stung with the tsunami of bureaucracy and financial burdens that follow,is quite another.

When you are in the midst of it it feels like you have been dealt a cruel hand of cards.

But with the help of you all, it turns out we don’t have to play by the rules!

So I just spoke to Pixie and she is overwhelmed with all your support. I asked her what the break-down of the costs were. We thought it would a) be good to see where your money is going and b) to share knowledge for when one of you may have to go through something similar.

In her own words (of course <3)

Funeral breakdown - probably kinda interesting to those trying to work out why the hell it costs so much - mental stuff !

• Embalming - £75.00 (to stop the body from smelling bad as we approach the crematorium)
• Simple funeral (cheapest i could find for area of north London) £1995
• Additional mileage (transporting the body from firmly park hospital to north London new southgate crematorium) - £46.60
• Doctors Fees (after Harold Shipman, there is now the requirement for 2 doctors to certify the cause of death and no need for a coroners investigation. This is to stop the death of people being hidden if done in secrecy - if that makes sense - its paperwork) - £164.00
• Cremation Fee - £780.00
• Cost the death certificates - £28.00
• Cost of printing photos, cost of materials making/decorating the coffin - which will be around about - £100.00

All in all - the funeral comes to £3188.60 plus the fees that PayPal and GoGetFunding.com take (a total of 6% around £210.00!) = £3398.60 which leaves £101.40 for food, drinks etc on the day (or anything we may have forgotten!)
