UPDATE - END OF FEBRUARY

Update posted by Alex Cooter

There have been some changes to the original plan, due to the warehouse capacity and needs of the islands, limits on funding and the developing situation on the Greek / Macedonian border and, of course, in Calais. We received more clothing donations than we anticipated and we do not have the funds to ship them all. (One pallet costs £600+ to ship). Also, some donations were not suitable for shipping (often because they were too large). We plan to sell some of these clothes to raise further funds to ship the needed items. I am mindful of the responsibility of using people's generous donations and I hope that the current plans meet the needs of the refugees, whilst also meeting the expectations of the donors. Next week, we will be shipping a pallet (approximately 9 boxes) of shoes and socks to Chios. We will also be sending warm jackets etc to the Macedonian border and will be sending some warmclothes and blanketsto Calais. After this, depending on funding and identified needs, we will either ship more clothes to Greece or use the remaining funds for travelling costs to Calais. None of this would be possible without the generosity of Brighton & Hove City Council employees and school staff and students, who donated clothes; the staff, volunteers and Youth Offending Service clients who worked so hard and thoughtfully in sorting and packing the clothes and the many people who have donated money. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. Any further funds not used to transport clothing will be donated to the Clocktower Sanctuary, to support the young homeless people of Brighton.
