Update on assistance to housed refugees and new housing

Update posted by Andrea Oterová

Update on RECENTLY HOUSED PEOPLE

Myriam and Ali and their beautiful baby are settling into their new home and, with the help of Richard, are sorting out their paperwork. We have found them an Arabic-speaking pediatrician and their first appointment went well. They have to go back in three weeks for a further check. This week we are focusing on making an appointment for Myriam for her six-week check. Myriam speaks some English but when it comes to health, especially of a baby, it is important to be able to communicate fully with the doctor. We have found several Arabic-speaking doctors in Vienna but are always happy to receive recommendations - please get in touch if you would like to recommend anyone (must take WGKK)!

We have bought them yearly tickets for the public transport system in Vienna so that they can travel easily to all their appointments and have taken them more in-kind donations, including clothes and baby items. Mercedes, who lives nearby, visited them on Saturday and took them some items - thank you Mercedes! Ali will start German classes this week and Myriam is going to try and study as much as she can from home, using apps and other materials.

The Jaffar children, Malak and Mustafa, started Kindergarten this week and they are enjoying it very much. Kamar is attending German classes when she can and she and Ahmad are planning to go more regularly once the children are at Kindergarten full time. Their needs are covered by their hosts and we are hoping that soon they get their benefits.

Robabeh is living on her own so she does not have much support from hosts, we are in touch with her and have helped her sort some doctor appointments which she needed. She speaks great English and is quite independent. Next week we plan to check her needs further and help with what we can.

Housing needs: We need volunteers to help look for housing and support refugees at shelters. If you would like to support us please contact us :-). People who do not receive benefits need the following: Metro tickets (single, weekly or monthly) Toiletries (shampoos, body washes, any necessities, etc.) Nappies for babies (a newborn and a two month old baby), a two year old girl and size 6 plus nappies

Thanks Sarah for the update on Myriam and family and Qamar and family! :-) Thanks Ivana, Mercedes, Sarah and Virginie for your support and dedication! :-)

NEW HOUSING: The family Mahmoud, whom we have helped house last year, had temporary accommodation until the end of this month so they were all very desperate to get a new place to move to; their only other option would have been to go back to a shelter. Their children are already enrolled in kindergarten and school and they are integrating well. Last week Flüchtlinge Willkommen contacted us about a potential house for them. We met with the hosts and it went very well. Next month they are starting to slowly move in. Their current great hosts will assist them in getting furniture and necessary items and they will be visiting them regularly. They already got their benefits and are therefore quite independent. They were very pleased to get this new place. We will post a picture of them in their new house soon. For now we post a picture to remind you of them. :-)

We have recently also registered approximately 15 more new people from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan (including a family with three children, a couple, a lonely woman, a pregnant woman with a child, a musically talented boy, a pregnant woman with her family) who are staying at Vordere Zollamtsstrasse camp and Lindengasse camp. For these people, we were very lucky to get some generous volunteers to support them while they are in the camp. Even though volunteers and workers at camps are working hard 24/7 to make conditions for refugees as best as possible, understandably, they still find it hard to stay there. Therefore, we want to ease this at least by supporting them with needed donations, visiting them in hospitals (the case with the pregnant lady who was quite sick recently) by meeting with them or providing information about Vienna and so on. Thank you Sarah, Courtney, Monika, Sonia and Ivana for offering to support these people. :-)

We are making collections of donations for the refugees who need necessities through our group’s Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1649527115304656/.

If you would like to support our cause, please donate on this site or become our follower. For money donations, you can donate here, for material donations please send us a private message on this site (to Andrea Oterova or Alexander Kiselinchev): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1649527115304656/

Thank you to all the donors, hosts and volunteers, we really appreciate your generosity and support!!! Please keep it coming!!!:-)
