Ice Cream in the Philippines

Update posted by Roberto Oliver

Ice Cream in the Philippines

Ice cream was introduced to the Philippines during the American occupation. Sorbetes is the traditional ice cream served in sugar cones and bread buns. Instead of using cow?s milk, Filipinos use the coconut milk.Flavors also varied from the usual natural fruits such as mango, avocado, melon, jackfruit, coconut and strawberry to flavors imitating commercial ice cream such as chocolate, cookies and cream, cheese, mocha, ube, etc. Ice Cream is peddled by a Sorbetero who uses a colourful wooden cart with metal canister inside to contain three different flavours. The cart is stuffed with shaved ice sprinkled with salt to produce a lower temperature around the metal canisters and keep the sorbetes frozen longer.

Sorbeteros usually get their ice cream in the morning and walks the streets ringing their bells as they pass by. The Sorbetes industry competes with the big Ice Cream companies operating in the Philippines.
