Update 17th October

Update posted by William Barnes

William's Auntie and Uncle (me) visited William yesterday. He is on Ward D2 now, having been moved out of the Critical Care Unit, and seems to be progressing well. He is eager to be up and about, but as yet cannot get out of bed, without help from his parents - and then only to go to the toilet.

He is speaking short phrases, and interacts with some people in a restricted way, but is still unable to talk long sentences. He can ask for the toilet, speaks short phrases to his mum and dad, and answers some questions: I asked him what his bear was named, and he replied 'Arron'! He responds sometimes to others' questions, but uses few words; he seems to be confused when strangers are in the room.

However, he is comfortable, feeling some pain - which he can describe, and for which the nursing staff were preparing painkilling medicine for him to take - and seems to like watching the TV above his bed. We are not yet sure how much he 'takes in' but he was active, awake and always happy that his mum and dad were there. He is ensconced in a special bed, which prevents him from falling or climbing out, and he has a nurse by his bedsde 24/7 if his parents are not in attendance.

It is still early days yet, but things look more promising. He gets tired easily and is receiving speech therapy, and it is hoped he can be moved nearer home, maybe Ipswich Hospital, sometime in the near future. This was discussed with medical staff yesterday, but it was decided William is not yet stable enough to be moved. The issue will be raised again in due course. He is eating well now, and even had chocolate yesterday!

Everyone is very grateful for the care William is receiving, and the family are truly thankful for the kind words and deeds of everyone who has contributed. They have no choice but to stay in Cambridge, until such time as William can be moved nearer home. The contributions so far received have helped tremendously, so the family would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone.
