Hello. My name is German (Gerry) Kavoun. I am a 55-year old Canadian. I went blind 6 years ago as a result of a parasite infection Acanthamoeba. It is so rare that it took a year to diagnose. To treat the infection required using the same antiseptics as they use to clean swimming pools( pH and chloride). After they have destroyed the Acanthamoeba and my eyes, a reconstruction process began. Now, 16 surgeries later, I'm still blind, because the organic cornea transplant did not work ( for 3 times). A few weeks ago Dr Begg of the Ottawa General Hospital Eye Institute agreed to perform a procedure on my eye, using a synthetic cornea from Boston Prosthetics. Because the procedure is considered to be experimental in Canada ( although it has been used in the US for the last five years with a 98% success rate), Ontario Health Insurance does not cover it completely. As a result, I have to pay for the appliance myself - $3200. Being on disability assistance, there is no way I can gather this sum in six weeks ( the operation is on June 22). If I miss this window for surgery, the next may not present itself for months or years to come. Before this affliction, I was an engineer, had a successful business, a house and a family. Now, 6 years later, I am broke, alone, blind, and desperate to regain vision and become productive again. Bless you for any help you provide. my contact number is +1-613-8095015 my contact email [email protected]
