Bizana Community Veterinary Clinic

Bizana CVC is an equine vaccination outreach program in South Africa. The project is headed up by Dr Rissa Parker (Glen Austin Equine Clinic) who aims to vaccinate the rural ponies of Bizana against African Horse Sickness.

The project team aims to visit Bizana (which lies between Kokstad and Port Edward) at least four times every year. To date over 1000 ponies have been vaccinated, and many of these have had more than one set vaccinations against African Horse Sickness.

This project not only works to keep the ponies of Bizana healthy but it also comes with an added opportunity for school children to ride to school as opposed to walking. Riding to school ensures the children of Bizana will attend school regularly and arrive fresh and not tired from walking extremely long distances. Thereby further contributing to their success at secondary school.

The ponies' owners are required to pay a nominal fee for all the vaccines and veterinary treatments, the long term aim being the creation of a sustainable veterinary clinic/business in the area in the future.
