“Biting The Hand That Feeds You”

Written Treatment

“Biting the Hand That Feeds You” is a documentary that seeks to assist in putting an end to the outrages spate of farm attacks and the excessive killing of local farmers in South Africa. The documentary follows a young black South African who wants to establish for himself the impact of farm attacks on all those affected by it. He travels across the country, speaking to farm attack victims and affected parties, telling their stories to the world.

The documentary will focus on farm victims as well as the effect that these attacks and murders are having on the country economically, socially as well as agriculturally. The aim behind focusing on these three factors is to connect the South African public to the tragedy of farm attacks by simply making South African Citizens, across the board, see how farm attacks are affecting their everyday lives and will continue to affect daily living if not addressed effectively soon.

‘Biting the Hand that feeds you’ plans to serve as the eye opener that South Africans need, a real in-depth look into what it means to kill the people responsible for producing food, highlighting the immediate and the lasting effects of these inhumane acts, but above all, the documentary will highlight the insanity that has overcome humanity and just how we as humans are continually slaughtering each other. Utilising mirror techniques in order to create a new wave of consciousness in South Africans, the idea being that if we can move people away from racial consciousness when talking about farm attacks, and move them into a new world of social consciousness, we can put an end to the senseless killing of our farmers and food producers.

This is a story that has managed to capture a significant amount of global attention. Now is the time to create and package a visual illustration of what is happening in South African with regard to the impact of farm murders; an opportunity to create a wave of social consciousness in South Africa and beyond where general society would stand together against this violent crime.

Let us not let the farmers who have lost their lives to have done so in vain. ‘Biting the hand that feeds you’ wishes to use these horrific stories to help prevent a continued assault on the farmers, their staff and the associated families. Together we can do just that.

The documentary needs to have credibility with the intended audience i.e. South Africans from all walks of life. It is therefore important for the presenter to tell the truth (e.g. by talking to all those involved about things like inter-cultural relationships on the farms, mutual interest etc). The idea would be for the viewers to be informed about the realities of living and working on a farm as well as the negative impact of farm attacks on all linked to the farm.
