An on-going comic series based in the fictional StarCity Universe, a reimagined version of the world, with focus on Southern Africa.

SYNOPSIS

BISHOP Q turned his back on his past, and hometown, and is living as an underground rap artist in a new city and territory. The past catches up with him and along the way he discovers powers that allow him to time travel.

The stories covered in the comic are loosely based on historical events from the African continent, with a focus on South Africa and Southern Africa. Some of the topics covered include South Africa’s history, mining and migrant labour, as well as family, friendship and choices.

THE CREATORS

The BISHOP Q comic is written by Motlatsi Kane. He has been reading comics and books from his early childhood in Maseru, Lesotho. The STARCITY universe is based on area in Maseru he grew up, called Naleli, which means “Star” in Sesotho.

“A lot of the stories I tell are based on my experiences growing up and living in Lesotho and South Africa. My neighbour's, and first best friend, father worked in the mines of Johannesburg and a lot of my stories reference mining, migrant labour and the effects on families.” - Motlatsi Kane

Sekantsi Mokhohlane is a digital artist based in Maseru, Lesotho.

'Having grown up reading comic books and watching anime, I am keen on one day soon seeing an Africa where projects like Bishop Q are more common.' - Sekantsi Mokhohlane

THE CHARACTERS

ISSUE 1 (The story thus far...)

Making choices isn’t always easy, and we only get one chance at making the right decision, right?

This is true for everyone except BISHOP Q. From a young age, he has always felt like he could take a peek into the future. Almost like a hand reaches out at crucial points in his life and guides him.
But before he understood this power, he was running from his hometown, StarCity, and past. He can no longer ignore his ghosts when his friends, SLIVA and PONO, arrive from StarCity and need his help to take down an old and dangerous foe.

Feedback about the comic

Update posted by Coalsack Media at 10:59 am

"Bishop Q isn’t trying to imitate anything else out there at the moment. From its use of South African idiosyncrasies to even the distinct artwork that’s a nod to several local styles, issue #1 of this new comic book series refreshes and stands out from the pack. This isn’t trying. . . . .
