Last year was catastrophic for forests, particularly in Australia and the Amazon. I'm sure many of you have generously donated to help stop the fires and/or start reforestation in those places, but forests all over the Philippines are in a sorry state as well. We are losing approximately 47,000 hectares of forest cover every year, thanks to legal and illegal mining operations, logging, agricultural fires, tourist development, and population expansion. Forests are the first line of defense against natural calamities, especially floods and landslides, which plague the country every year and result in massive losses of life and property damage.
For my birthday, I decided to start a fundraiser among family and friends to donate to Adopt-A-Seedling, a program by the Haribon Foundation to help restore forests around the country while conserving biodiversity and helping local communities thrive. Haribon Foundation has been at the forefront of biodiversity research and conservation for nearly 50 years.
For as little as PHP 380 (USD 7), you can adopt a seedling and this amount covers its preparation at a native tree nursery, planting, and subsequent monitoring by local community partners and farmers for three years. Indigenous trees such as narra, kamagong, and takip-asin are among the seedlings that will be planted.
And there’s more! Each donation of PHP 380 per seedling includes a Saibon Shampoo Bar, hand-crafted with natural ingredients by organic farmers from Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur. I will find a way to get the shampoo bar to you, even if you live overseas!
Nurture a forest and it nurtures you back. :) Thank you for your generosity!
