For my birthday this year, I’m creating a fundraiser for Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge. Established by the Mission for Migrant Workers in 1986, Bethune House provides free temporary shelter for foreign domestic workers in distress. The organization has recently lost one of their major funders, leaving them in need of over 1 million to continue their mission.
WHY SUPPORT BETHUNE HOUSE?
Bethune House supports migrant workers who are undergoing labour or criminal cases against their former employers. Some of these women have been physically assaulted or accused of theft, while others are seeking unpaid wages. Forbidden by law to take employment during their cases, they are placed in a vulnerable position socially and financially.
With two shelters in Hong Kong, Bethune House accommodates up to 30 women at any time. In addition to food and shelter, the organization provide services such as counselling, medical aid, legal assistance, and transportation. To keep both shelters functioning, Bethune House requires $120,000 HKD each month.
Having had the opportunity to volunteer at Bethune House few years ago, I remember being touched by the staff’s dedication, as well as the sense of community between the shelter’s residents. Bethune House is a valuable organization that empowers migrant women who otherwise have little voice in Hong Kong, despite their significant contribution to the city’s development. I sincerely hope you will consider donating.
My current goal is to raise $5,000 HKD (approximately £450 or $800 CAN) throughout the month of April (although more is certainly welcome!). This amount would be able to support 5 clients for 1 week. Any amount of donations would be welcome. Payment by debit or credit card can be accepted.
In addition, Bethune House is seeking regular pledgers. If you are interested, please contact Cynthia Abdon-Tellez at Mission for Migrant Workers at [email protected].
Thank you for your support.
