We are a couple riding bicycles from Vietnam to the United Nations Climate Meeting in Paris in November 2015. As well as trying to raise awareness of catastrophic climate change and inspire people to take action to prevent it we want to help out vulnerable communites in Vietnam already threatened by climate change.
We are raising money for two projects. The first is a project to raise awareness of environmental protection, biodiversity and wildlife conservation among young people living near Tram Chim National Park in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. More details of this awesome initiative run by young people for young people can be found here. This project only requires $700 so the rest of the money we raise will go towards the second project.
For some communities in Vietnam climate change is already a reality. High tides regularly swamp their properties, the salty water destroying valuable crops and degrading their land. The salt water also contaminates their water supplies forcing families to buy in fresh water. These already poor communities face a serious challenge to adapt to the threats they face. Having experiences a number of wonderful trips to the Mekong Delta and been blown away by the friendliness and hospitality of the people I really want to give something back to help out those in need.
Binh Thanh commune in An Giang province is one such community. Each year for the past 6 years they have experienced salt water intrusion events. The second project we are raising money for will help some of the poorest families in this community to create a second income stream through the construction of a drought and flood resistant mushroom growing system. Making a significant improvement to their lives and helping to protect them against the future shocks that climate change will ineviatable create.
The two phases of this scheme require $5,500 each. We are confident we can reach the first target but really want to achieve the ambitious goal of funding both. If we manage to raise $1 for every kilometer we ride then we will easily exceed that. With your help we can!!!
Thanks in advance for your support
