To make a difference in the world around us - is one aspect of the Achievers Program of Anglo American we are participating in. A Sustainability/Community Project to make a Real difference is the task of the participants, as Anglo American values, making a difference in the communities in which it operates. As a group of the participants, we came up with the idea, to support a local school in Johannesburg with reading material and providing bicycles for teachers and or scholars. This would reduce the time it takes learners to commute to and from school and enables them to spend more time in class and on homework. Learners are less tired, meaning they are better able to concentrate on their schoolwork. It is proven that: • In South Africa, 12 million of the 16 million school-going children walk more than two hours to school and two hours back. With a bicycle, a child’s commute time is reduced by up to 75%. • Marks improve by an average of 25% for children who ride a bicycle to school. • Schools where children ride bicycles to class see attendance rates rise by 18% on average. Please support this initiative by donating some funds and making the milestone of R$ 1000, which would enable us to buy 5 bicycles with a lock, pump and a helmet. Thank you for making a change!
