Bicycle Changes Lives of Rural Poor Girls

Rationale

This project plans to support a bicycle each for higher secondary education of 100 poor girls (9-12 grade) in the southern school of Gorkha Nepal where they are forced to walk at least 4-15 km for the nearest higher secondary school. A bicycle in hand, a girl is more secure on the way, regular in school, saves time & energy for better performance that helps feel the gap of pass out percentage between boys and girls. Her continuous engagement in school means fewer chances of her being victims of child marriage at home and more time support to her family in other activities.

Challenge

Thousands of girls across Nepal do not continue their high school education & are married at a young age. Among others, one of the key reasons they drop the school is their long walking to the school ( not being an alternative to reach school). They become tired and are insecure on the way. Further, expected to help with household chores, girls are often kept at home for various excuses while their brothers attend school. Due to this reason, they are irregular and often late for school. This project will help continue the high school education of 100 girls in southern parts of Gorkha Nepal. Our partner IDEA will liaise with the local high schools for the implementation of the project. Thus each year 100 girls will receive of bicycle Incentive in the communities.

Solution

As an initiative to end child marriage and to offer an opportunity for girls to continue education, this project will provide a bicycle gift each to 100 poor girls as an incentive who are in grade 9 -12 in government schools in the southern part of Gorkha Nepal. Additionally, they will be provided with a school bag, air pump & common tools to repair their bicycle. A bicycle in hand, a girl is more secure on the way, regular in school, saves time & energy for better performance that helps her continue her study further & avoid child marriage.

Euro 9 - A poor high school girl can buy an air pump for her bicycle.

Euro 15 - Can afford a school bag for a girl student and a basket installation I her bicycle.

Euro 15 - Can provide a simple set of bicycle repairing tools including an air pump for a girl student

Euro 86 - Can buy a brand new bicycle for a poor girl to continue her high school education and recipient girl’s photo with the bicycle , family and contact details will be emailed to the concerned donor.

Thus we need to raise Euro 12,500 to support 100 poor girls as inceitive to continue their education.

Long-Term Impact

This project educates 100 girls from poor and marginalized groups to have a higher secondary degree in school. Voices of girls in the typical male-dominated Nepali family are rarely heard and valued. A higher secondary level educated girl is matured & confident enough to decide about her carriers, marriage & her role in the house & the society. She can influence the family decision and even convince her parents what is best for her. Once a girl is educated & empowered rest she will do all alone.
