We are a group of student filmmakers from Lasalle College of the Arts making our Thesis Film called Beyond the Fog. We decided to start this crowdfunding page as we require funds for production needs such as crew welfare, props and wardrobe and renting locations. If you're interested to help us out, do continue reading!
Beyond the Fog is a magical-realist film about a young fisherman, grieving over the death of his wife. One day, he finds a Sea Spirit, in the form of a young woman and tries to form a connection with her.
Beyond The Fog is fundamentally a story about loneliness, grief and loss, seen through the life of a fisherman related to the indigenous sea nomads (Orang Laut) of Southeast Asia, a group of forgotten individuals with a dying culture that is being threatened by modernisation.
I chose to direct this film not only because of my sentimentality for the broken-hearted but also because it contributes as an important historical document which records and preserves the cultural heritage of our great ancestors. Given that the kelongs in Southeast Asia are slowly disappearing day by day as modern technology advances, and most of the kelongs in Singapore are used for commercial farming, I feel that it is crucial to immortalise them in the form of film and photography before they are completely gone. With Singapore being an island that is surrounded by the sea, stories about the lives of people at sea are something we shouldn't be overlooking.
The film focuses on a world that is rural and hugely disconnected from urban civilisation, where life is slow paced and filled with simple habitants that follow a relatively sedentary lifestyle. The location of the fisherman’s dwelling, a kelong surrounded by the open sea, serves as one of the main motifs of the film, symbolising his isolation and lack of contact with the outside world that most of us are accustomed to. Living on the kelong alone without the former companionship of his missing wife, his suppressed emotions and vulnerabilities lead him to create fantasies that he can project his thoughts in.
