Beyond Caring:

A new play offering a voice to the

working poor

The Play

Beyond Caring is a play about life for the working poor. Developed through a collaborative process of investigation and original writing it is an honest depiction of what life is like for many people in Britain today.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Your support ensures that a voice can be given to the voiceless people working up and down the country who have neither the time, nor the resources to tell their story

The play has the support of numerous institutions working on issues such as the Living Wage as well as financial support from the Arts Council and many other foundations. Nonetheless, arts funding is so constrained in Britain today that there is still a final mile in the budget that needs to be met.

Plot Description

Four people arrive to work the night shift in a meat factory. They meet for the first time. They are employed as cleaners, by a temp agency. They are all on zero-hours contracts.

Every shift, they clean. Every four hours, they take a break. They drink tea or coffee together. They read magazines. They chat. As it gets light, they go home, or to another job. The cycle goes on. And on. Strangers. Until something stirs, until isolated people get too close to one another, too fast.

Through investigation, first-hand experience and with the involvement of people working on zero-hours contracts, the World Premiere of Alexander Zeldin’s brutally honest and darkly humorous play exposes stories of an invisible class.

  • Thank you Sharon for your support! Here is a link to my work online: http://unitedagents.co.uk/alexander-zeldin The bulk of the work I did in opera goes back a few years and is very different to what I'm doing now - however, here is a link to my Gianni Schicchi from 2008 - Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, V Gergiev http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP-0STxYBxI
